Chiang Mai is a large and busy city, which makes its many tranquil parks and gardens all the more appealing. Offering a range of recreational activities, seating areas, natural palm trees, native wildlife, winding pathways and usually an array of striking exotic flowers, the main parks in Chiang Mai are especially popular at lunchtime, when many people come here for an impromptu picnic, or simply to purchase refreshments at one of the snack vendors.
Particularly notable is Buak Hat Park, where a mixture of landscaped planting, water features, fountains and bridges make this an attractive setting, while the Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens contain many striking plant specimens and plenty of seasonal interest. Home to a large and impressive collection of tropical plants and exotic flowers, the Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens lie on the very outskirts of Chiang Mai and feature attractive mountainous scenery. The onsite visitors centre offers a range of information about the native flora and fauna, which can be enjoyed along the innumerable nature trails.

A vast park sited on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon National Park is perhaps most famous for its mountains, which include the Doi Inthanon, the tallest mountain in the whole country. Many vantage points offer good views across the park, while guided tours ensure that you don't miss any of the many sights, which include natural water features and dramatic scenery.

Huay Tung Tao is a big, artificial lake, which is surrounded by waterfront attractions. The perfect contrast to life in central Chiang Mai, you can expect a host of water sports and similar recreational activities here, which include boating, angling, swimming and even wind surfing.

Sited on the northern side of Chiang Mai and close to the superhighway itself, Rajamangkala Park is regularly frequented by locals, who come here to make use of the pathways, which are suitable for jogging. With plenty of peaceful picnic spots, a playing field and a number of lakeside attractions, the park also boasts several refreshment stalls should you require a snack.
